BMI and BMR Body Fat Analyser Monitor

BMI and BMR Body Fat Monitor is an easy to use portable fat analyser that is suitable for adults and children (ages 10 to 99). It has 9 memory channels each with 9 memories - enabling you to do measurements in 9 different people and keep them for 9 consecutive times able to recall the last 9 measurements for each user. The body fat monitor has a large LCD display for clear reading. It is suitable for men and women and has a selector for gender (M/F), age (10 - 99) , weight (10 kg - 199.8 kg) and height (100 cm - 199.5 cm). The operation takes 5 seconds and the results are immediately displayed on the large LCD, presenting the following:

BMI (body mass index)

type of body build (i.e. emaciated, standard, corpulent, muscle corpulent)

BMR (basal metabolic rate)* in KCAL

* BMR - Basic Metabolic Rate is a minimum calorific requirement that is needed to sustain life during resting. BMR decreases with age and with the amount of fat we carry. BMR can be raised by undertaking of regular exercises. Another factor that influences BMR is height (i.e. taller people have higher BMR than shorter people). BMR also increases in pregnant women. BMR decreases during dieting and it is therefore important to understand that the most effective weight loss can be achieved by a combination of good diet with exercise regime rather than through dieting alone!

BMI Body Fat Analyser is battery powered (2 AAA alkaline batteries included) and light (approx. 340 g).  User instructions enclosed. CE mark. 1 year warranty.

BMI and BMR Body Fat Analyser Monitor is priced at £14.95 incl. VAT

General Information on Basics of Weight Management

Concerns about the level of obesity in the UK are growing. Currently in the UK 50% of men and 33% of women are overweight with as many as 20% of men and 24% of women classed as obese (data from Leatherhead Food International Ltd.). It is predicted that if the weight gaining trend continues, by the year 2010 more than 1 in 4 adults will be obese.

Obesity has many negative implications on health and fitness. Conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and even stress are adversely affected by body weight  and % body fat content. It is therefore important to maintain appropriate weight and life time leanness. Eating a healthy balanced diet, rich in fresh fruits and vegetables and exercising regularly can help to achieve and maintain healthy weight and a trim figure.

However, it is important to note that being underweight is equally undesirable as it can lead to frailty, hormonal imbalance, weakness and overall poor health.

Body weight should be maintained within the range considered to be normal for individual height. Other factors important to consider are gender and age.

Height Weight Range
156 cm /  5'2"  50 to 64 kg / 7 to 9 stones
162 cm   /   5'4" 50 to 66 kg / 7.5 to 10 stones
168 cm   /   5'6" 52 to 70 kg / 8 to 10.5 stones
172 cm   /   5'8" 55 to 75 kg /  8.5 to 11.5 stones
176 cm   /   5'10" 58 to 77 kg / 9 to 12 stones
182 cm   /   6'0" 60 to 83 kg / 9.5 to 13 stones
186 cm   /   6'2" 64 to 85 kg / 10 to 13.5 stones

Weight awareness and monitoring should become part of regular health routine. Sudden or unexplained weight change should warrant a check up visit to a medical professional to exclude more serious underlying health conditions. When necessary, changes in lifestyle (i.e. diet and exercise) should be considered in order to maintain body weight within the normal range.

Body weight can be easily measured by simple weighing on traditional type bathroom scales. Weighing Scales or Body Weight Scales capture total body weight comprising of bones, organs, muscles, fluids and fats. Personal weight and height can be converted into Body Mass Index (BMI) that provides a better indicator of personal weight status. BMI can be easily calculated by dividing weight in kilograms by the square of height in metres. BMI under 20 indicates underweight, BMI in excess of 25 signals overweight and BMI over 30 is obesity.

In recent times, not only weight, but also body fat measurements began to play an increasingly important role in the overall health assessment. Too much body fat can lead to health problems and serious chronic illnesses. However, fat is also amongst the body's most pivotal components. Fat regulates body temperature, insulates and cushions organs and serves as a source and storage of energy.

Assessment of body fat provides a truer picture of overall health and fitness. The measurement is usually expressed as a percentage of fat that is present in the total body weight. There are a several different ways to measure the fat content (i.e. body density DEXA scanning, underwater weighing, calliper pinch testing). The most convenient and fastest way is to use a body fat monitor, also called body fat analyser monitor.

Body Fat Monitors work by sending a very weak electric current throughout the body. The current travels faster in the lean muscles and slower in the fatty tissues and fatty deposits. Based on this "travel speed" differential, the body composition is calculated and the fat component is expressed as a percentage(%) that is a reflection of its quantity. For instance - if you have 25% body fat and your weight is 100 kg - fat represents 25 kg of your total weight.

A few interesting body fat facts:

bulletMen on average have less body fat than women.
bulletPercentage body fat in both men and women increases with age.
bulletHealthy % fat range for men is between 19 - 25%.
bulletHealthy % fat range for women is between 33 - 36%.
