The Sun generates heat and light essential to terrestrial life. We all need sunshine to live and to thrive.

Small amounts of sun exposure can be healthy and beneficial. For instance, exposure to sunlight brings up skin synthesis of vitamin D. Vitamin D aids our bodies to absorb calcium from foodstuffs and helps us to have strong and healthy bones.

However, unprotected exposure to the sun can cause a lot of damage to our eyes, immune system and the skin. Long and unprotected exposure to the sun's ultraviolet rays can cause premature aging of the skin, hyperpigmentation, permanently dilated capillaries, loss of skin elasticity and firmness and can also lead to skin cancers. The rate of skin cancer is currently rising amongst people of all ages, but most alarmingly amongst younger people in their 20's and early 30's.

Many people are addicted to having a deeply golden tanned skin. It makes them feel healthy and attractive.

Tanning is caused by the UV light which reacts with melanin, a pigment found in the skin. Melanin is the primary determinant of the colour of the human skin. Melanin absorbs ultraviolet rays, trying to protect the the skin from injuries induced by sunlight. Sunburn occurs, when there is not enough melanin in the skin to absorb all the UV rays reaching the skin. Some skins have very low melanin levels, others have very high. Generally, lighter skins have tendencies to burn rather than tan and are very sensitive to the sun exposure.

It is very important to protect babies, toddlers and children from the sun, because suffering sunburn during childhood and/or teenage years greatly increases the risk of skin cancer.

There are 3 types of ultraviolet rays:

bulletUltraviolet C (UVC) rays are normally absorbed by the ozone layer before reaching the surface of the earth.
bulletUltraviolet A (UVA) rays that are the same strength all year round. It penetrates through clothing and windows. It causes the colours to fade on furniture, books and paintings. It causes exposed skin on our hands to tan and freckle, when we are driving and our faces and necks, when we are looking out of train or airplane windows during travel. The UVA rays are very damaging, causing premature skin aging, loss of skin elasticity and progressive wrinkles.
bulletUltraviolet B (UVB) rays are the most dangerous. UVB rays cause much greater problems than the UVA rays. UVB rays are closely associated with increased risks of skin cancers. UVB rays are sometimes called the 'tanning rays' and are the strongest in the summer, when the earth orbits at the closest distance from the sun.

Some weather programmes present a daily and/or weekly forecast of UV radiation. This is very helpful in the prevention of the overexposure to the sun. UV index is based on the elevation of the sun above the horizon and is always highest at the time of local solar noon (11 am to 1 pm). UV index is always higher in the summer, because the angle of the sun is higher during summer.  UV radiation related skin damage risk categories are linked to the UV index (i.e. Low, Moderate, High, Very High, Extreme).

How to protect yourself from the damaging effects of the sun

bulletRegulate and minimise duration of sunlight exposure: The best way to minimise the damaging effects of the sun is to limit the duration of exposure to the sun, being especially vigilant at midday, when the sun rays are the strongest and the most dangerous.
bulletCover up: Wear protective clothing, hats and glasses that offer UV protection. Use sun umbrellas, but remember that UV rays can be reflected upwards by surfaces on which you walk or sit, such as pavements, sand and snow.
bulletProtect: Use protective broad spectrum sunblock or sunscreen skincare with SPF 15 protection factor or higher. Use waterproof or water resistant products. Re-apply them regularly. If you go on holiday to sunny countries, consider daily sunblock.
