Stress Incontinence

Stress incontinence is not caused by a bladder weakness. It is caused by a weakness of the pubococcygeal muscles that surround the bladder.

In stress incontinence, urine loss - leakage of urine - occurs during exercise, walking, standing up from a sitting position,  coughing or sneezing. As most of muscles in the human body, the pelvic floor muscles must be regularly exercised to improve their strength, tone and function, thus minimising the potential to develop stress incontinence or reduce its debilitating symptoms.

A note to readers: The other types of incontinence -  urge incontinence - is most commonly due to an unstable detrusor muscle, the muscle of the bladder wall. Detrusor contracts unexpectedly and disturbs the holding force of the voluntary pelvic muscles, which leads to a spontaneous discharge of urine from the bladder. A strong feeling of urgency to urinate may precede the event, but without sufficient warning that allows to reach the toilet in time. And - overflow incontinence - this can be described as an inability to totally void the bladder and manifests itself as a dribble or continuous leakage of urine. Men who suffer prostate problems often present with such symptoms.

Pelvic floor exercises based on squeezing and contracting of the pelvic muscles, also known as Kegel exercises, are a recognised treatment and management option for women suffering from stress incontinence. Kegel exercises may also be of value in the management of some types of sexual dysfunction and in maintaining female pelvic health. Strong pelvic floor muscles increase sexual sensitivity and improve sexual responsiveness. An array of different types of devices is available to assist women with pelvic floor exercises for life long pelvic floor fitness. You can chose from a battery powered electrical muscle stimulator that will exercise your pelvic floor muscles effortlessly or you can opt for a pressure based device with biofeedback on the progress that you are making.

Here we present a selection of simple but effective products that can help you to prevent pelvic floor weakness leading to incontinence and sexual dysfunction. These products can be safely used in the comfort of your own home.

Incontinence is often seen as a normal part of getting older, because it is more prevalent in older people. However, incontinence can occur at any age and for many reasons.  Vulnerability to lose urinary control increases after childbirth. Due to the personal nature of incontinence, many people are to embarrassed to seek professional help. Our best advice is – if you develop symptoms, consult your medical professional  - local continence adviser, doctor, practice nurse or physiotherapist!
