PLEASE NOTE THAT THE MOST RECENT TERMINOLOGY REFERS TO LLLT AS LASER PHOTOTHERAPY

LOW LEVEL LASERS / COLD LASERS /SOFT LASERS ARE NOW REFERRED TO AS LASER PHOTOTHERAPY DEVICES

Bothersome problems like cold sores, chapped lips, inflamed corners of the mouth, runny nose, inflamed nostrils and acne spots can be effectively treated with hand held pocket size low level laser light. There are several such low powered devices currently on the market. One of the most popular pocket soft lasers intended for personal use at home is the Beurer SoftLaser SL30 (also marketed as hand held soft laser light Vitalmed SL40 or Beurer SL40).

Living cells require energy to perform their biological processes and functions. Light stimulates the mitochondrial production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) - the primary biological cell energy source and the energy-carrying molecule.

Light is a visible part of electromagnetic radiation. Light energy is absorbed by the cells, where it helps to metabolise sugars from foodstuffs and oxygen to produce vital energy that accelerates cell regeneration and healing processes and enables effective defence from invading pathogens.

Low-level laser light (LLL) - also called cold laser light or soft laser light - is a type of a concentrated light from the cold red and/or infrared spectrum of the visible or invisible portion of electromagnetic radiation. Cells treated with low-level laser red or infra-red light can produce more cellular fuel, called the ATP, thus helping self-healing and regeneration. Low-level laser light therapy (LLLT) can help to relieve pain, inflammation, swelling and redness. LLLT - laser phototherapy - stimulates metabolism in connective tissues, energises and strengthens the immune system and activates cellular defences. With regular use over a period of time, it can minimise small scars, smooth out fine wrinkles, reduce spider veins and exert an overall biostimulation effect on the skin and underlying connective tissues called photorejuvenation or photobiorejuvenation.

Please note that therapeutic biostimulation lasers - also called cold lasers or soft lasers - are not 'heat lamps' and they do not cause perceptible tissue heating or even warming. Cold laser light does not heat treated tissues. The Low Level Laser Therapy -  also called Cold Laser Therapy and/or Soft Laser Therapy - exerts photochemical effects rather than thermal.

The biostimulative effectiveness of soft laser devices/cold laser devices/laser phototherapy devices depends on the wavelengths employed for their specific effects on tissues as well as the depth of penetration required for the light to reach the target cells. Another factor of paramount importance is the power output. In general terms - longer wavelengths penetrate tissues deeper than shorter wavelengths (see Fig.1). Soft lasers with low power output are less effective in tissue penetration and take much longer time to show beneficial effects. Soft laser devices with high power output transfer more energy to the treated cells and also penetrate more deeply into the tissues (see Fig.2) and are therefore much more effective in exerting significant biostimulation effects.

In other words, powerful cold lasers (laser phototherapy devices) with high power output require fewer as well as shorter in duration treatment sessions to achieve desired therapeutic outcomes, when compared to cold laser devices operating on low power output. To a certain limited extend it is possible to compensate for low power output by using longer wavelengths that naturally penetrate more deeply into tissues (see Fig. 1 & 2 below). To read about a powerful 'home and clinic' therapeutic cold laser, refer to PalmLaser page by clicking here.

For more detailed information about the LLLT, we recommend a book from Prima Books, entitled 'Laser Therapy Handbook' by Jan Tuner and Lars Hode and other guides and books as presented on our LLLT Books page. You can also visit www.laser.nu

Please note that home treatments with low lever laser light device must not replace medical consultations or seeking of professional medical advice. Always consult your doctor, if you are worried about any aspect of your health or existing condition! Conventional therapies are not contraindications for the use of low level laser light devices. Synergistic use of low level laser light alongside other treatments may speed up the healing processes and lead to faster recoveries or overall general improvements.

Many people perceive the non-invasive low level laser light devices to be the modern approach to anti-aging skincare. Much research into the healing and anti-aging effects of the Low-Level Laser Light Therapy (Cold laser Therapy or Soft Laser therapy of Laser Phototherapy) is now available from many research centres and universities from around the world. The more powerful the lasers are - the faster and more significant improvements can be achieved! Please always bear in mind that low power output pocket soft lasers - laser lights/cold laser lights - do not provide overnight fixes to aged skin problems! Soft lasers are non-invasive and as such, cannot remove wrinkles mechanically. But soft lasers energise the skin cells and greatly improve skin condition, making it more elastic, flexible and youthfully smooth. Soft lasers provide subtle, but cumulative improvements over a longer period of time. Good results and lasting successes can be achieved through patience and regular daily treatments.

Pocket sized low power soft laser devices, such as Beurer SL30 a very small power output circa 5 - 6 mW and therefore require focused use on small areas with regular daily usage over long periods of time to achieve noticeable cosmetic improvements.

More powerful low level laser devices/cold lasers/soft lasers/laser phototherapy devices (i.e. power output circa 100mW) that emit more intense concentrated cold light can produce noticeable results more rapidly and in far fewer and shorter treatment sessions, simply because the amount of energy transmitted by them to the cells is significantly greater.

When using LLLT devices (laser phototherapy devices), please consider the following points:

bulletResponse to light therapy is very individual. Some people respond faster than others. Lasers accelerate healing, hence damaged or compromised tissues will show improvements more readily than tissues that are showing normal age related wear and tear (i.e. persistent cold sores or resistant acne boils will respond and disappear more rapidly than fine lines and wrinkles caused by normal aging process). Laser treatments have cumulative effects, which means that the dose from one treatment lasts for sometime and what remains will be added to the dose delivered in the next treatment. Laser phototherapy interacts with medication, which means that some medicines can suppress the positive laser effects, whilst other medications can increase them.
bulletTreatment with laser phototherapy devices is painless, safe and can be effective, but only over small areas and when coupled with regular long term daily use. Make it a integral part of your health and beauty routine - you can use it anytime and anywhere - it is convenient and discreet. Simply run the light emitting probe over the affected areas in small circular motions few times daily as instructed in the user manual.
bulletYou may note that while treating imperfections located on the surface of the skin, you may find that holding the laser slightly above the imperfection and not touching the skin is much more effective than pressing the probe into the skin over the imperfection. Shining the laser over the spot or the small area facilitates energy transfer into the upper layers of the skin, where the imperfection is located. Pressing the head into the flesh directs the laser beam to the deeper tissue layers, whilst bypassing the imperfection.
bulletPlease also note and bear in mind that although you can treat your facial area with a soft laser at any time, you should aim to use it, when your face is clean and free of make up and moisturising creams. This is because some moisturisers and some types of make up contain molecules of minerals that can either absorb the light or bounce it away from the treatment target cells. This will of course be detrimental to your efforts and minimise the positive outcomes of laser therapy.

Regular use of the low level laser light devices can help to:

bulletenergise tissue and stimulate collagen regeneration
bulletheal acne and reduce symptoms of eczema
bulletsmooth out fine lines and shallow wrinkles
bulletreduce fresh stretch marks and minimise fresh new scars

Frequently Asked Questions

bulletDo the low level laser light devices work on people of any age and any race?  Yes, they do!
bulletAre the low level laser light  effective on dark skin?  Yes, they are! They work on all types and colours of skin.
bulletIs there any pain involved and can I get burnt or hurt?  No - the treatment is non-invasive and there is no pain - the LLLT is safe and painless.
bulletCan I use low level laser light on the Crow's Feet around my eyes?  Yes - it can improve the appearance of wrinkled skin over a period of time. However, be careful to keep your eyes closed and not to shine the light directly to your eyes! If you accidentally direct the laser beam at your eyes - no harm will be done. However, endeavour not to look directly into the laser light.
bulletIs the low level laser light same as the Laser Pointer used during presentations?   No - the Laser Pointers do not penetrate the skin. The low level laser light devices presented here are certified Medical Devices designed to energise human cells at the cellular level.
bulletHow fast will I see improvements in the appearance of my Crow's Feet and spider veins? Low level laser light devices are non-invasive and do not provide radical or quick "overnight fix" results. Many of such devices have a low power output that require regular long term treatments with regular energy load into the treated areas for a cumulative effect over long time. Beurer SL30 soft laser is a pocket size soft laser with very low power output of 6 mW. It is a device that provides complimentary and synergistic support to other methods of skin care or conventional skin treatments. It requires disciplined long term use as a part of normal daily beauty routines. Subtle improvements will become apparent over a period of time. As with all treatments, some people respond faster than others as well as different problems are quicker to eradicate than others. LLLT can also effectively contribute to the prevention of potential problems or minimise exacerbation of existing problems. General common sense rule is that the older, the more established and the more severe problems will take longer time to respond (i.e. new spots, small ulcers, fresh bruises, fine lines and few newly broken veins will improve faster than deep boils, large areas of established spider veins, large old stretch marks, very deep wrinkles and ingrained lines). In short - the faster you act the quicker and better the outcomes will be.
bulletSpeed of Action: Please bear in mind that soft non invasive lasers with higher power output circa 100 mW, such as PalmLaser, can provide significant results much faster.
