SimCair® Pressure Ulcer Preventive Mattress System

SimCair Revolutionary Self-Inflating Pressure Ulcer Preventing Mattress System

Portable and lightweight pressure prevention mattress system for the prevention of pressure ulcers in all types of patient care environments (i.e. nursing homes, residential homes, care at own home).

SimCair is a new innovative mattress overlay developed by Hill-Rom. SimCair Mattress Overlay has been specifically designed to provide a ready made and rapid help to people at high risk of pressure sores, including those newly identified and requiring effective, affordable and immediate preventive protection.

Pressure ulcers are chronic wounds that are very difficult to heal and, if not successfully treated, pressure sores can also ultimately affect underlying muscles, bones and joints. Pressure sores - also known as decubitus ulcers or bedsores - occur in people, who are immobile or bedridden and left sitting or lying in one position for long periods of time.

The areas most susceptible to pressure sore formation are the areas of the bony prominences not well padded by muscles or fatty tissues, such as hips, heels, back of shoulders (i.e. on scapula), tailbone and the back of head.

Pressure sores develop from small skin irritations into serious skin lesions, rapidly evolving into non-healing painful wounds prone to infection. Pressure sores arise from a combined effect of the body weight pressure exerted on the surface of the skin that leads to the tissue damage due to prolonged blood inflow deprivation and the friction between the skin and the hard surfaces of a bed or a chair/wheelchair. Skin damage that initially presents as a red or a dark coloured patch can be further exacerbated by moisture. As little as a couple of hours of sustained pressure can lead to the development of pressure sore. If not treated and relieved from pressure, the small red irritation on the surface of the skin can soon become a blister and, thereafter, progress further into a painful, deep and nasty wound.

Pressure sores can occur in people of all ages during times of prolonged immobility and serious illnesses. Frail elderly people are especially at risk due to the presence of other health conditions, reduced mobility and overall deterioration in health. The development of a serious pressure sore increases morbidity, reduces quality of life and presents a life threatening event.

Pressure sores are preventable. However, the fastest possible action is required as soon as the patient is identified to be at high risk. If potential for pressure damage is recognised in the very early stages - before a significant deterioration of tissues occurs - and preventive action is implemented immediately, pressure ulceration is unlikely to occur (Gledhill L, Hampton S. A simple method of assessing pressure ulcer risk. Nursing and Residential Care 6(11):532-5).

When a patient at risk has been identified, it is important to provide appropriate pressure relieving equipment that allows immediate implementation of preventive action. The SimCair mattress overlay is the solution as it is portable and easy to use and it is also much more economically priced than other pressure prevention systems.

The SimCair Mattress Overlay System is a self-inflating mattress overlay that requires very little set up education and efforts. The SimCair Mattress combines temperature sensitive visco elastic foam technology with static air technology allowing better body weight redistribution with reduced overall interface pressures.

In March 2004 a small scale unstructured 4 weeks long assessment of SimCair mattress on 19 nursing home patients of average age 89 years was undertaken by a tissue viability nurse consultant. All participants were satisfied with the comfort of the SimCair Mattress Overlay and all remained free of pressure damage during the 4 weeks. A follow up call also revealed that the patients remained free from redness for further 4 weeks. SimCair Mattress Overlay was found to be at least as effective or better in reducing the interface pressure as a currently used air-filled overlay (see the table below).

The conclusion of the study was that the SimCair mattress is an effective, easy to use and a cost effective mattress that can provide prevention from pressure damage (Sylvie Hampton. SimCair: a simple mattress system to support pressure ulcer prevention. British Journal of Nursing, 2005, Volume 14, Number 7).    You can view this study by clicking on the blue title and when you complete the reading - simply click the 'back' button to return to this page.
