Pressure ulcers, bedsores or decubitus ulcers are painful ulcerations and sores that form on vulnerable parts of the human body, when subjected to a constant sustained pressure that cuts off local blood flow. After a period of time without adequate blood supply that delivers nutrients and oxygen whilst removing waste and toxins, the tissues in the affected area suffer irreversible damage and die.

Pressure sores can appear very fast - even after few hours of sustained pressure. They grow and change rapidly from small skin irritations to large and nasty wounds affecting not only skin, but also the underlying tissues, muscles, bones and joints. Pressure sores are prone to infections and are often difficult to heal. They diminish quality of life, cause a lot of misery and pain and can become life threatening.

Pressure sores can occur in people of all ages during periods of immobility or long illness. Anyone who is bedridden, anyone experiencing agility difficulties or is unable to change their sitting or lying position - these are just a few examples of people, who can develop pressure related sores. People especially at risk are those living with paralysis and the frail elderly people suffering serious underlying health conditions and immobilising injuries.

Medical experts say that pressure sores are largely preventable, if preventive action is implemented as soon as increased risk of developing pressure sores is identified. Effective prevention of pressure sores is at forefront quality care standards. In today's modern care environment, pressure sores are increasingly seen to be preventable events and a failure to prevent them is perceived as a failure to provide a reasonable standard of care to a person in need.

Making appropriate equipment readily available to persons at high risk at the earliest time is an important feature of good standards of care delivered by responsible carers. Effective and affordable products that are portable and easy to use make the goal of early prevention possible and achievable!
