Cold lasers have been used successfully by
veterinary doctors, animal keepers and pet owners for well over 30 years.
Low
level laser therapy (LLLT) is simply an irradiation of traumatised or painful tissues by
red and infrared laser light. During
irradiation, the laser light is absorbed by the tissues, leading to increased
cell metabolism, increased collagen production and an increase in the density of
the capillaries, leading to improved blood flow. The red light laser light is
absorbed within the cellular mitochondria, stimulating increased ATP production,
whilst the infrared light changes membrane permeability, allowing increase in
the ATP activity.

Accelerated
production of the ATP (Adenosine TriPhosphate) is the main and the most
important effect of laser light on living cells. ATP molecules are found in the
cells of all living things. In animal and human systems, Adenosine TriPhosphate is
synthesised in small cellular organelles called mitochondria. In the
mitochondria, the primary cellular energy source - the ATP - is produced by
combining oxygen with sugar derived from food.
ATP
can be described as the 'energy carrier' or the 'energy shuttle' capable of
harnessing the
chemical energy generated from the breakdown of the foodstuffs and transporting
it across cellular membranes for conversion
into 'fuel' that is required for normal body functioning. Adenosine TriPhosphate
is often referred to as the 'energy currency of life'.
The effects of low level laser
therapy include nerve regeneration, faster healing with reduced scar tissue
formation and a reduction of inflammation, pain and swelling. Low level laser
therapy is safe and side effect free. It can be used on its own or as an adjunct
to conventional therapy (i.e. medication and/or
physiotherapy).
LLLT produces positive biological outcomes
in animals. It is totally painless and non frightening and does not
traumatise treated animals.

Low level laser therapy (LLLT
or laser phototherapy) can help to treat the following animal
conditions and problems:
Treatments with PalmLaser are convenient and easy and do not traumatise or
frighten your pet. Experience has shown that moderate doses of laser light
applied 3 or 4 times per week can achieve better and faster results than high
doses applied less frequently. Acute problems should be initially treated daily,
reducing to 3 treatment sessions or less per week with time. Chronic conditions
should be treated minimum 3 times per week, gradually reducing to 1 or 2
sessions per week. When treating open wounds and problems located on the surface
of the, the laser should be held 1 - 2 cm away from the target area. When
treating deep located problems, the laser should touch the skin over the target
area and a gentle pressure can be applied. For stimulation of acupuncture points
- irradiate each individual trigger point for 2 minutes, applying the laser
diffuser to it with a gentle pressure.
PalmLaser
is suitable for use on large working or farm animals (i.e. horses,
ponies and cows) and
on smaller domestic pets (i.e. dogs and cats).
