HipSaver UK Clinical Trial News

The RHINO Project - a Project to Reduce Hip Injury in Needy Older People - a year long project undertaken in Dudley, West Midlands between July 2003 and June 2004. The RHINO trial was funded by a dti modernisation grant. The aim of the RHINO trial was to evaluate the use of two types of hip protectors (hard shells protector Safehip and soft pads protector HipSaver) amongst frail dependent fallers and fallers with dementia, both in their own homes and in a care home setting, with a view to highlighting the most cost-effective use of future funding.

HipSaver Soft Hip Protector Products Range

HipSaver has been designed with the users in mind and it provides the best adaptive solutions to different people's needs. HipSavers are made in several different styles and in 7 sizes for the best comfort and optimum fit. All styles of HipSaver incorporate the dual action 'energy absorbing' and 'energy shunting' airPads, carefully positioned to fit snugly over the vulnerable bilateral trochanteric areas and permanently sewn in for maximum safety and convenience. HipSavers with an extra tail bone airPad are also available. All HipSavers are fully launderable and can be tumble-dried at very high temperatures(95 degrees C) as required by institutional laundry regulations.

Points to Note:

bullet

Please note that the HipSaver airPad does not take up fluids, such as water, urine or blood. The viscoelastic foam is encapsulated in polyurethane film to form an airtight and watertight pouch. Radio frequency technique is used as the encapsulation process. The pad can be washed at 95 degrees C (boil wash) and tumble dried at high heat.

bullet

Please also note that under the body weight the pad slightly inflates - like an air cushion - due to the presence of air trapped in the pouch. The pad is temperature responsive and when worn, becomes soft and pliable, moulding itself into the body contours.

bullet

Please note that HipSaver airPads as well as HipSaver garments are designed to be compatible with incontinence and will therefore  accommodate the largest incontinence wear. HipSaver airPads and HipSaver garments will withstand the harshest laundries that comply with the infection control regulations.

Easy Pull - Up Handles - the very best option for people with severe grip difficulties

Easy Pull-Up Handles can be placed on any of the available HipSaver styles on special request. The handles are a 'no extra cost' option to help elderly people with severely arthritic hands or with extremely compromised grip strength.

How to measure for the best fit

To measure for appropriate size, you need to measure the hip size - circumference measurement around the body at the level of the upper thighs (trochanteric areas). This area can be recognised easily as it moves when a person raises a knee up in a standing position.

The hip bone is actually the top of the thigh bone. It is shaped similarly to a small light bulb. This bony ball can be easily identified and located, when fingertips are placed on the side of the hip. Whilst raising the knee slightly upwards, a movement of the underlying bone can be felt.

The hip is not to be confused with the pelvic bone that is located much higher and just under the waist and more towards the front of the body. The pelvic bone does not move, when the knee is raised.

To ensure correct fit, measure the body circumference over the hip bones - front to front and around. Compare the measurement with the size chart as presented above.  Note the measurement for a future use. If you have a large tummy, consider ordering the next size up.

Evaluation of acceptance and effectiveness of HipSaver soft hip protectors by Joanne Alexander, a Manager of 20 Bedded Home specialising in Dementia Care, Kent, United Kingdom

Injuries from falls cost lives- it’s that simple. Reducing the risk of injuries is not an easy task, especially with Dementia Sufferers who cannot remember their own abilities.

My solution? Encourage those at risk of falls to wear Hip Savers – thus minimising the risk of injuries as far as possible without restricting their independence.

In my experience, no client who has fallen whilst wearing Hip Savers has suffered a fractured hip- whatever the circumstances. I have used solid-shell style hip protectors in the past, but they have been uncomfortable for the wearer (especially overnight) and hence compliance was reduced.

However, since switching to Hip Savers I have not had this problem- they are well tolerated by clients and have won approval from staff and families alike.

Everything comes at a cost, and yes- the initial outlay seems expensive. But, as I say to families who are funding the purchase, there is no cost on a life.

Statement from Monica Harvey BScPT, Registered Physical Therapist, Alberta Hospital, Canada:

"I am a physical therapist working in a Geriatric Care facility. We have been using HipSavers now for about a year and a half.

We have been very pleased with this product and in this time have not had any hip fractures from falls while our patients were wearing HipSavers.

We have considerably reduced the number of patients who were previously 'restrained for safety' as our staff feels much more secure allowing ambulation by patients who have mild balance impairments, knowing that they are wearing HipSavers."

Testimonial from a Scottish Retired Lady Doctor:

"I have used hip protectors for the past three and a half years after a lumbar vertebral collapse due to osteoporosis.  I have used them daily and found them very satisfactory except for their hardness and for this reason I have not used them at night.

Recently I have purchased 3 pairs of soft hip protectors Hipsavers Slimfits.

These new hip protectors are much more comfortable and therefore acceptable for 24 hour use. Like the original hard protector, the new soft Hipsaver model washes well.

In short, I am delighted with my Hipsavers."

Testimonial from a Scottish Care Professional:

"As an Occupational Therapist, I am all too aware of the consequences of hip fractures, therefore I encourage all my patients who have osteoporosis and are at risk of falling to wear hip protectors. Both my mother and mother in law have been wearing ones with a rigid shell for several years and they have proved their worth.

However, these new hip protectors HipSavers from Win Health were brought to my attention last week and I was able to wear a pair day and night. I found them extremely comfortable. I lent them to my mother who had been wearing the hard shell variety and she was absolutely thrilled. She said they were incredibly comfortable and said that if she had to get another pair she'd definitely choose them!"

Ms. M., Scotland. (Name on file)
