Ed Goodwin, the President of the HipSaver Company Inc. based in Boston, MA, launched HipSaver in 1994.

Ed Goodwin is a consumer products designer and engineer trained in developing consumer-friendly goods. Ed’s background and his beliefs are reflected and very evident in the HipSaver products.

Ed has always believed that new age materials should be used to create an effective soft protector that is easy to wear, comfortable and truly user-friendly in all its parameters and aspects. He believed that this would motivate users to accept the garments and comply with wearing them. Lack of motivation to wear and/or to administer hip protectors present a real stumbling block to their long term effectiveness in hip fracture prevention. Comfortability, appearance and compatibility with the elderly people's needs as well as with the needs of the carers is very important. It is equally important as the effective force attenuation capability of the hip protector.

In line with Ed’s vision and conviction, HipSaver offers a full range of garment styles to meet different needs and a full range of sizes for a proper and comfortable fit.

HipSaver is a user-friendly effective soft hip protector. HipSaver is now routinely and successfully used in well over 5000 nursing and residential homes and hospitals worldwide. The acceptance of HipSaver is rapidly growing. Countries include the USA, Canada, Ireland, the UK, Australia, Israel, Czech Republic, Sweden and Germany.

Read the findings and conclusions or even print out your own copy of the RHINO Project - a Hip Protector Project to Reduce Hip Injury in Needy Older People - a year long project undertaken in Dudley, West Midlands, United Kingdom between July 2003 and June 2004. The RHINO trial was funded by a DTI modernisation grant. The aim of the RHINO trial was to evaluate the use of two types of hip protectors (hard shells protector Safehip and soft pads protector HipSaver) amongst frail dependent fallers and fallers with dementia, both in their own homes and in a care home setting, with a view to highlighting the most cost-effective use of future funding.

Recently published 'cost-benefit' analysis of external hip protectors in the nursing home setting states clearly that hip protectors represent not only a cost-saving intervention, but that hip protectors prolong lives and their use leads to 'life expectancy gains' in the elderly population destined to have a fracture. The authors recommend a preferential use of the soft-shell variety of hip protectors, because soft hip protectors are preferred for comfort and are likely to have improved adherence rates without compromise to biomechanical effectiveness.
