Incontinence Incontinence manifests itself through distressing symptoms and can happen to people of any age and any gender. Sufferers often hide these from their families, friends and even from medical professionals. However, there are many embarrassing tell-tales, such as wet sheets, chairs and eventually the inevitable specific urine odour. For many people a social isolation and depression follow.
Pelvic muscle strength is also of a great importance when considering female sexual health. An added benefit of a strong pelvic muscles is improved sexual sensitivity and greater responsiveness. Pelvic floor muscle exercises may help to improve, restore and maintain good sexual function.
And often - a refresher is also welcomed by professionals. Please, note that there is no VAT on books and educational posters.
This is a recent
testimonial from a trained physiotherapist given after reading the Women's
Waterworks Curing Incontinence:
"Dear Pauline - Found your book absolutely
fascinating. Just into pregnancy No.2 at 5 months and was rather concerned
about my poorly performing pelvic floor. As a physiotherapist I know I should
have been doing those pelvic floor exercises but thought that just being a
member of CSP made me exempt!! I had been told many, many times to 'do' these
exercises but your explanation, your self-test and your dim prognosis has made
me really 'do' the exercises. I now feel I am achieving an effective strength
programme, rather than 'doing' those exercises.
In two days I am markedly better. I have
passed your book on to a work colleague and will rave to my midwives that this
book should be made available to all antenatal ladies.
Thank you again for your concise,
professional and educational book."

Constipation and/or faecal incontinence affect many women. One in three women over the age of 40 suffers constipation, whilst one in ten women over the age of 40 experiences some degree of faecal incontinence and/or has problems with wind. Both these bowel difficulties may be related to the pelvic floor muscle weakness. However, it is also important that women understand other important contributory factors, such as diet and posture. Pelvic Floor Function and the Bowel is a simple guide to understanding bowel difficulties. It suggests simple ways of improving bowel function, reduce constipation and flatulence and prevent faecal incontinence. Dr Robyn Nagel, a Gastroenterologist and Shirley Owen, Women's Continence Physiotherapist are the authors of this informative booklet that delivers valuable health information to women of all ages. The booklet is full of useful visuals, charts and constructive and helpful recommendations. Pelvic Floor Function and the Bowel booklet is provided with a laminated A5 Fibre Chart, which allows a fast and easy 'at a glance' calculation of a daily fibre intake that is essential for healthy bowel habits. Size A5. 14 pages. Priced at £4.99 per copy.
A comprehensive guide to pelvic floor, bowels, postural issues, continence and diet - a fantastic educational and informative resource for medical professionals and for women of all ages. With growing concerns voiced by the health professionals in respect of the numbers of people diagnosed with diabetes and obesity and the impact of these conditions on good bowel habit and overall health, this comprehensive self help guide ‘Good Bowel Habit, managing constipation and incontinence’ is a timely and informative publication that every woman should read. The Good Bowel Habit explains the role of the pelvic floor and the development of pelvic floor weakness with its early consequences (i.e. stress incontinence, vaginal flatus, decrease in sexual response) and eventually progressing to unpleasant genital prolapse - uterine prolapse, bladder prolapse, rectal prolapse and small intestine prolapse - with further serious implications on long term health, mobility and independence. The book is the work of a gastroenterologist and a physiotherapist, both of whom have been treating women presenting with problems related to constipation, obstructed defecation, urinary and faecal incontinence and persistent flatulence. The authors witnessed and recognised that poor diet has serious effects on human body and poor dietary choices can often lead to dysfunctional bowel habits with serious implications to health. The Good Bowel Habit offers a wealth of practical information and advice to women suffering with an array of bowel problems, including constipation, prolapse, pain around the back passage and faecal incontinence. The Good Bowel Habit is a guide to good dietary habits with an explanation of how food is digested and processed and how the cultivation of good bowel habits correlates with exercise and musculoskeletal fitness, culminating in the efficient elimination of waste from our bodies.
