Blood transports the nutrients and oxygen to all parts of the body through a network of blood vessels - veins, arteries and capillaries. Blood pressure depends on factors like the amount of circulating blood, the pumping strength of the heart, the diameter of the vessels and any resistance to the blood flow within the vessels (i.e. obstructions and narrowing). Balanced/normal blood pressure helps to facilitate correct flow of the blood within the body. Excessively low blood pressure may prevent the blood reaching the extremities, thus starving them of oxygen and nutrients; whilst raised/high blood pressure - if undiscovered and untreated - can precipitate a damage to the walls of blood vessels and to the heart muscle and lead or contribute to dangerous and life threatening events, such as heart disease and strokes.

In general, changes in blood pressure are valid indicators of the overall state of health. Changed blood pressure may signal a presence of an underlying condition that needs treatment or it can manifest an unhealthy lifestyle that requires modification. It alerts to potential health problems that could be prevented or minimised, if prompt medical advice is sought.

High blood pressure - hypertension - can kill, if the sufferer remains unaware of it and without effective treatment that corrects and controls the problem and/or the underlying condition. Hypertension is often a silent condition that can go undetected for many years until it has caused a visible and obvious damage. Often people feel no symptoms at all and the longer the high pressure goes untreated, the greater the damage that can occur. Medical professionals, patients groups and charities alike, all contribute significantly to the public understanding and awareness of high blood pressure, its symptoms, assessment methods and diagnosis, available treatments and long term management.

Low blood pressure - hypotension - is seldom serious. The most problems occur when blood pressure drops very suddenly, depriving the brain of an adequate supply. This causes dizziness, light-headedness and unsteadiness. In some people, postural hypotension - pooling of the blood in lower extremities - can occur, when suddenly rising up from a sitting or lying down position. Postural hypotension can cause falls and lead to fall related injuries, which can be gravely serious - especially in the frail elderly people.

Personal awareness of own blood pressure together with medical guidance are essential to the long term welfare of people with blood pressure problems - more importantly when the high blood pressure is present.

There are many factors that play a part in the increased risk of high blood pressure. These include age, family history and gender. Many underlying conditions or diseases, such as pregnancy, hormonal disturbances, diabetes or kidney disorders can cause or exacerbate the hypertension. Highly crucial are lifestyle habits like diet, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption and level of fitness (i.e. regular exercising).

Advances in medical sciences make it possible to effectively correct and control the blood pressure with many different pharmacological treatments available. Basic lifestyle changes -stopping smoking, eating healthier diet and exercising - can also make a positive and significant difference.

The key messages are:

bulletconsult your doctor
bulletfollow medical advice and recommendations
bulletimprove your understanding of blood pressure and the contributory risk factors
bulletmaintain a healthy lifestyle - stop smoking, don't drink alcohol to excess, eat healthy diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables, reduce intake of fat and salt, lose weight and exercise consistently
bulletcheck and monitor your blood pressure frequently
bulletkeep track of your blood pressure - if it is higher than your doctor advises, seek further help
bulletremember always to consult your healthcare professional - a doctor or a nurse -  if you are worried about your blood pressure, any unusual symptoms or any aspects of your health

New age technology based on the revolutionary principles of Fuzzy Logic * makes it possible for people to check and monitor their blood pressure frequently, conveniently, anytime and anywhere. Fully automatic wrist type monitors are affordable, simple to use and give accurate and clear measurements of the following parameters:

bulletsystolic blood pressure (blood pressure on the heart muscle contraction - the higher reading)
bulletdiastolic blood pressure (blood pressure at the time of the heart muscle relaxation - the lower reading)
bulletpulse rate

* Fuzzy Logic is also used in computer programming; expert systems such as used by doctors for diagnostic purposes; digital cameras; spells checkers and other applications of artificial intelligence.
